Our study data shows that insurance rates throughout the country, on average, tend to be highest for younger, less experienced drivers and decrease with age. South Dakota is no exception. In fact, some insurance companies in South Dakota charge teen drivers thousands of dollars more for insurance than older drivers, with Allstate charging the most and State Farm, Farmers Mutual and USAA charging the least.





Gender, too, is a factor. Depending on the insurance company, in South Dakota a 17-year-old male driver could pay anywhere from a hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars more for insurance, on average, than a 17-year-old female driver.

When determining rates, car insurance companies place stock in an applicant’s credit score and history, often charging thousands more for those with poor credit. South Dakota drivers with a poor credit score insured by Progressive pay the highest rates, on average, while those insured by Nationwide pay the lowest, according to our study. Those with a good credit score see the lowest rates with Farmers Mutual.
